Preserving ethnic heritage in the great melting pot also known as America is a passionate issue. This is especially true in an age of "sensitivity training" and various heritage days celebrated across the land.
Winfield Myers has an interesting post on muliticulturalism and features a story in the Netherlands and the rise of Islam in that culture. There is certainly lots of tension with big changes in demographics. America is no different. Myers writes:
"Of course, our own nation faces similar challenges as we confront massive inflows of legal and illegal immigrants. How do we inculcate and preserve America's unique culture in the midst of such a challenge?"
It is a great question. Similarly, how do we define America's unique culture so we recognize the difference?
I guess this gets to the heart of multiculturalism...how much relativism do we need? There cannot be separate rules and laws based on one's ethnic culture. Certainly multiculturalism has its limits.
