Why does France...

France seems to be in the news these days.  I picked up this article via RealClearPolitics:

Ralph R. Reiland, of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review underscores the "Problem with France."  There is a strong anti-American obsession in Europe, particularly in France.  This obsession started years ago.  My favorite passage in the column:

"Hubert Beuve-Mery, the future founder and editor of Le Monde, wrote in May 1944: "The Americans constitute a real danger for France -- a danger different in kind from the threat that may eventually emerge from Russia.

'The Americans can always prevent us from making the necessary revolution and their materialism does not even have the tragic grandeur of the materialism of the totalitarians. If they cling to a veritable cult of the idea of liberty, they don't feel the need to liberate themselves from the servitudes that their capitalism entails.'

As Beuve-Mery was writing those words, the Nazis had all the best tables at the top nightspots in the French capital, the Jews in France were still being rounded up and transported to Auschwitz and the 4th U.S. Infantry Division was still three months away from liberating Paris."

French Assistance

Professor Bainbridge has a great post regarding three LA Times Editorials appearing on 12 March 2005 criticizing France.  I also like the following quote:

"Ever since Charles de Gaulle pulled France's military out of NATO in 1966, Paris has cherished the illusion that it is something more than a minor power."

Just something for the troops to read...especially those in Iraq who might benefit from France's generosity...did I mention the French contribution?

"The contribution? Some $660,000 to a NATO fund for military and police training in Iraq and one French mid-level officer who's being assigned to the training mission at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Not 1,000 officers. Not 100. Just one."

Wow...thanks alot!
